The Great Unknown Zine with TSPTR

For this project with clothing brand TSPTR, I investigated my idea of ‘homegrown’ and what is sentimental to me. From this, I looked at the ocean, and the stories, memories, and shared experiences we each have with the sea.

I looked into mine and my family's relationship to the coast (my father grew up in Cornwall) and the surrounding surf culture. I also thought about the significance of the ocean within wider society and folktale, thinking about the idea of stories, messages and dichotomy of calm and chaos.

I received an award for narrative and storytelling, as well as other mentions from my lectures for this zine.

The Big Idea: Immerse individuals in
an escapist journey, exploring nostalgia and freedom in uncertain times

Client Response:

Russ Gater, Founder of TSPTR also resonated with the narrative and storytelling aspect of the zine, referencing the inclusion of 60’s and 70’s subculture movements and key individuals noted in the zine.

Further feedback praised the ‘first impressions are excellent with
the hand-crafted belly band and the choice of paper. The overall aesthetic, name and branding are very well-considered and applied professionally, even down to the detail of the credits on the back page. You have created a great narrative with a selection of simple, yet strong personal stories and it is great to see the use of your own photography.’
